News: In the wake of this month’s fire, what’s next for Broad Street art galleries?

A fatal fire earlier this month in a vacant building forced the temporary but indefinite closure of several galleries in South Downtown Atlanta, including Eyedrum, Mammal Gallery, Murmur and the Broad Street Visitors Center. The galleries are holding their events in alternative locations for the time being.

Newport Holding, a development company that owns the buildings, said they will remain closed until it is determined those buildings are safe and up to code.

That leaves at least some of the galleries scrambling to figure out how to pay for needed improvements.

In the wake of the fire, Eyedrum held a town hall meeting last weekend to discuss the gallery’s future and the future of the arts in South Downtown. ArtsATL videographer Felipe Barral was on hand to film this report.
