Atlanta firm BLDGS made a home for Congregation Or Hadash Synagogue out of an automotive paint and body shop. LP3 Architecture, also of Atlanta, renovated and reprogrammed the 1958 Decatur Recreation Center to serve the city’s recreational, civic and arts programs.

These buildings carried off the two Honor Awards granted in the annual competition for Georgia designers by Georgia chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The jury – architects in San Antonio, Texas, led by Steven Raike of Lake|Flato — also gave out nine merit awards and ten citations to projects as various as a wine bar, a rope training course, a call center and a town center.

Three Georgia Tech projects earned awards. Four firms were multiple winners: LP3, Houser Walker Architecture and Gensler received two, and Perkins +Will grabbed four.
